Project WIN ‘08—A Green Bridge Across the Digital Divide was a continuation and expansion of Projects WIN ‘05 and ‘07. Through this project, we are broadening our reach internationally.

This project actually started during the brainstorming phase of Project WIN ‘07. When we were looking for possible countries to work in, one of our teammates, Alex, suggested Cameroon, because he knew someone who could help our team there. Raoul Andjongo was one of the Junior Board members representing Africa at the 2005 Children’s World Summit for the Environment in Aichi, Japan alongside Alex. Thus, we contacted him to find out how he could help us out.

Raoul was greatly interested in our project. He, his mother, and his aunt, Cecile and Rosemary, respectively, have been helping us out immensely to spread our project internationally.

In Cameroon, we designed an internet café with 10 computers. For this, we set up the café in miniature and refurbished all of the computers simultaneously, so we could set up the networking between the computers.

We were able to ship the computers in June 2007.

Now we are working to establish a system where companies in developed countries refurbish their used or replaced computers to send to developing countries. Specifically, we are looking fro the companies to donate their computers to schools. To accomplish this task, we are working with the United Nations Environment Program’s Bridging Divides Initiative, as well as WIN teams in Cameroon and Kenya. We have compiled a database of needy schools to present to companies and are currently looking for companies to support our project with their computers.
